To just decide can be the hardest thing in the world.
Whenever you try to accomplish something that is outside of your comfort zone, you will face self doubt. You will doubt your skills, you will doubt your confidence, you will doubt your dedication. You won’t be sure if you really have what it takes to reach your goals. And the bigger your goals are, the more you will be aware of your own limitations.
It often takes years and years of focus and dedication to get where you want to go. This is a huge commitment and understandably you don’t want to make it lightly.
You can’t beat self doubts with logic
In search for guidance and affirmation, you look at others and compare yourself to them. Are you better? Are you worse? You start doing research on what it would take for you to succeed. You dig into theory, read books and listen to experts. You talk to your friends and family, always hoping that they will attest that yes, you in fact have what it takes. The more you learn about your field of interest, the more you dabble, weighing the pros and cons of getting involved in it. On the one hand… on the other hand…
Ultimately, you end up more insecure than ever, with self doubts still nagging at you. There is no way you can get rid of them through logic. There is no way you can “convince” yourself that you are good enough. All that you achieve with analysing your situation in detail is that you lose a lot of time; time that you already could have used to move into the right direction. You cannot waste time weighing your options. Instead, you have to just decide.
Why it is rational to just decide
To do exactly that – just decide – will give you the freedom to follow your passion. Yes, it might still seem crazy. Yes, the odds might still be against you (actually, when pursuing a goal that is worth pursuing, they always are). Yes, you might still fail. But if you have a big goal, a big dream, a big vision for yourself, you won’t be able to give it up anyway. It will always be in the back of your head. So instead of pondering around, make a choice to move into the direction that your passion takes you.
It is the rational thing to do. It saves you time and energy that you can put into working towards your dream. It frees you from all distractions and allows you to focus. Who cares how small your chances to succeed are? Who cares how hard you will have to work for it? Just decide, fully commit and see where it takes you.
Just decide. Everything becomes easier after
Will Smith once put it beautifully:
There’s a redemptive power that making a choice has. (…) Make a choice. You just decide, what it’s gonna be, who you’re gonna be, how you’re gonna do it. Just decide. And from that point the universe is gonna get out of your way.
You will never be able to fully control each and every outcome. But if you want to have any influence on it at all, you have to be certain in what you want and how you want to get there. Making this kind of commitment is not the end of the road, it is just the beginning. But in many ways, it is the hardest part. Once you have decided, you just do what has to be done. it won’t be easy, but there will be no more room for self doubt.
So just decide.Published in
