It is a common saying in self development that you eventually become the average of the five people you spend the most time with. But while that is true, it does not fully show just why it is so important to surround yourself with inspiring people. Yes, being among great people makes you better yourself. But even more so, it humbles you.
We all are victims of the superiority bias from time to time. The superiority bias is a cognitive bias whereby individuals overestimate their own qualities and abilities, relative to others. We all do that. We think we work harder, are smarter, and are more talented than the next guy. In a psychological experiment, 93% of Americans thought that their driving skills are above average.
This is why it is so crucial to surround yourself with people that are actually outside your league! Sure, you get to learn from them and better yourself in the process. But mostly you get humbled by how much smarter, hard working and all in all better than you they are. This is, I believe, a central experience to any transformation and success.
Be humble. It keeps you moving forward, it keeps you motivated.
Today I talked with a guy that gave up his well-paid job, nice apartment and all the little luxuries that come with it to pursue his dream and start an own company. He now lives with 700-800 Dollars a month in a tiny student apartment, hustling for his dream. This guy inspired me in terms of dedication and determination. He also humbled me, since I am far from making this kind of absolute sacrifice.
Find people that humble you!
